Abstract

Luvsankhaidav, widely known among Mongols as the Choijin Lama, was the State Oracle, holding the titles of Precious Wisdom, Clear Devotion Qutuqtu, and Gujer Khamba, as well as being the younger brother of the Eighth Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, Mongolia's last sovereign. Archival research surrounding the Choijin Lama Temple and its subsequent conversion into a museum offers critical insights into long-neglected chapters of Mongolian history. Drawing on primary archival sources, this article examines the historical, spiritual, and cultural significance of the museum and broader monument preservation efforts, while contextualizing the socio-political and religious landscape of 20th-century Mongolia. Furthermore, by illuminating previously overlooked aspects of Luvsankhaidav's life -- including his Tantric credentials, his standing in the broader Buddhist world, and his true impact on the Bogd Khaan period -- this study highlights the importance of preserving and promoting Mongolia's cultural heritage today." keywords: "Choijin or oracle, Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav, Dharma protector, Tsarist Russia
