Transition to Open Access

2023-08-01

Beginning with Volume 23, Nomadic Studies is shifting to an online-first, open access publication format.

The journal's updated format is expected to enhance both the quality and accessibility of knowledge shared among scholars, practitioners, and members of nomadic communities. We are introducing an open peer review system and a more structured set of submission categories, designed to promote dialogue among researchers from diverse disciplines and scholarly traditions.

We are inviting submissions in the following three sections:

1. Reports: Short contributions that provide exploration and insight from research in progress. Articles in this section may describe preliminary results from ongoing studies, comment on field notes or raw data, reflect on a research process, invite readers to consider new ideas or approaches, or share stories and images from research collaborators. Submissions should be 1500-2000 words in length.

2. Dialogue: Thematically grouped collections of peer-reviewed research articles, followed by synthesis comments and responses from section editors and contributors. Where possible, grouped contributions will represent a balance of academic, practitioner, and community perspectives. Article manuscript submissions should be 6000-8000 words in length; individual comments and responses are 500-1000 words.

3. Reviews: Critical reviews of books, films, exhibitions, policy documents, or other recent publications or events related to nomadic peoples and cultures. Submissions should be approximately 1000 words in length.

We encourage all members of our network to share this news and to consider publishing with Nomadic Studies. We also invite all corresponding members of the International Institute for Nomadic Civilizations to register with our journal to receive email notifications of new issues, calls for paper, and events of interest to our readership: https://nomadicstudies.org/journal/user/register.
